There are moments where life can get really hard. At times it can even seem unbearable. Or maybe life itself isn’t hard, but you have been waiting for God to move in one area of your life for so long that you are running out of strength, and giving up hope.
Are you having a hard time believing that God will do what he said he will do for you?
Whether it be the promise of a spouse, healing in your body, restoration of family relationships, or a major acceleration in your career, we are all waiting for God to move in an area of our lives.
James 1 4-7 states:
4 And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing.5 If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. 7 For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord.
Now I know that I just gave you a whole lot to digest in the paragraph above, but let’s break this down so that we can have a full understanding of what God really wants us to know about endurance.
1- It is a process- Yes, I know that this should be a given, but we must understand that to endure is to withstand during a trying time or season of life. In some cases, it could be seasons. Normally before we are required to endure God has given us a promise of what he will bring to pass in our lives. Or we have been praying to him asking for something that we want to have in our lives. Either way the result is the same. If it is in alignment with God’s plan for us, we enter the process season where we begin the waiting game of that thing coming to pass.
2- It’s a test of your faith- The process that you go through is created to test you, and your faith in Gods ability to bring that thing to pass. This is where things get tricky because faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1 (KNG) as “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” So the real test is how long can you hold on to the things that you are hoping for, without seeing tangible results? Do you choose to believe God, and his ability to do all things, or will you choose to focus on what you can’t see happening because of your current situation? The hardest aspect of this is that often times when we are just first starting out we are filled with faith and our belief in God, but as time goes on we begin to grow tired, and restless wondering when OUR moment is going to happen. One thing to remember here is we MUST keep our faith, no matter how long the process takes. If you are struggling in this area, ask God to help increase your faith. We cannot get through this process without it!
3- You’re not alone- James 1:5 tells us if we are lacking in wisdom to ask God and that it will be given unto us, as long as we have the faith! God is letting us know here that he hasn’t left us during this time to just hang in there all by our lonesome. No! He’s saying “I have wisdom, strength, strategy, and a listening ear for you.” He wants us to come to him during our times of need so that he can guide us. He knows that it’s not going to be easy and that is why he’s letting us know that he’s right there with us every step of the way!
4- Your belief will determine the outcome- Now I know we spoke about faith already but this passage places such a heavy emphasis on what happens if we don’t believe, or begin to doubt in God’s ability to do what we need him to do during this time. In fact, James 1:6-7 we see that God really has an issue with unbelief. So much so in fact that if we come to him in prayer and doubt that we will receive NOTHING! This is not something that we want to happen. If we find ourselves struggling in this area, we will need to address this with God directly. A good way to start would be “God please help me to see your ability, and not my doubt in this situation.” The success of everything that you are hoping for is riding on your belief!
5- It will ALL be worth it- Had to save the best for last this time around! James 1:4 states that once the process is over we will be perfected, and lacking NOTHING. Which means we will be completely whole. No more being broken, fractured, and busted up. Nope! God is saying I know this process is tough but I am going to make it all worth it in the end. If you endure this process your going to come out of the fire like a diamond! You will be lacking nothing! Your entire life will be changed if you can just hang in there! Now I don’t know about you but that seems totally worth it to me!
God wants us to win! That’s why he has given us insight to the tools that we do have during the times where trials and testing are being thrown our way. We have what we need to succeed and make it through to the other side! As long as we stick to the strategy God has given us we are sure to win!
